Course Description

This 6 hour module builds on Introduction to Fieldwork 1 and introduces additional concepts for fieldwork in more natural environments. This module has both classroom and field components. The field component of this class takes place in forested/wilderness environment and focuses on interpreting base material and terrain and making decisions about what goes on the map and how best to represent it.

In this module you will practice the following:

  • Working with multiple base material layers including different lidar layers
  • Drawing techniques
  • Making decisions in the field:
    • Interpreting contours and vegetation
    • Classification of features
    • Creating a consistent map
  • Post-fieldwork drawing

By the end of this class you will have a solid foundation for working on your first forest orienteeirng map.

Participants should have previously participated in at least the Using Open Orienteering Mapper or Using OCAD class or have previous experience mapping with Open Orienteering Mapper or OCAD and Introduction to Fieldwork 1. Additionally, we highly recommend taking the other Introduction to Mapping courses. If you do not already have mapping experience with lidar data we highly recommend you take the Processing Lidar for Fieldwork class. If you have not taken these classes you will still be able to get lots of useful information out of this class but might find it a little harder to put it all into action. These classes will next be offered in the fall or winter and you can take them then.

Registration

Cost: $125 + tax

Please note there is an online processing fee of about $5 on top of the advertised price.

This course is designed primarily for mappers with little or no mapping experience that are wanting to learn some basic fieldwork techniques so you can get outside and practice mapping. If you are wondering if this course is for you, you can email jeff@navigationsports.ca. About a week prior the start of the class we will send out a quick questionnaire asking about your orienteering and mapping experience and what you want to get out of the class to help us tailor our teaching for you.
